Cloth + Stone Designs were engaged in 2019 to redesign the living space of Trebartha, a stunning Federation era estate on Milton Avenue, Mosman.

Built in the early 1900's this stunning home was originally created by Smith & Cabban, who were late 19th & early 20th century speculative builders and responsible for many beautiful homes and buildings in the area.

Trebartha is a heritage item listed property under the The Bradleys Head Road Conservation Area and is one of four fine ‘Queen Anne houses whose scale, style and massing contribute significantly to the streetscape’.* This group of homes were built to encapsulate far reaching views including the harbour standing high above the street level. A distinct exterior feature is the front sandstone retaining wall with crenellations and its original iron entry gates. Today the home skilfully combines Federation grandeur and modern day luxury with beautifully landscaped gardens and city views.

Our brief for this home was to create an elegant yet comfortable living and casual dining space, looking out over the rear garden. Taking cues from the garden and surroundings we created a palette of soft blues and greens, punctuated by natural materials. Carefully considered layers of colour and pattern create an inviting sense of warmth and playfulness.

Australian designed and made pieces have been selected throughout the space, including the blue velvet Arthur G sofa which is flanked by soft, well-crafted armchairs from Arthur G and Tide Design and a nest of Zuster coffee tables. Brass lighting by Marz Designs adds a luxe contrast against the blue walls.

The open-plan dining and living area embraces the abundance of natural light. The simple lines of the American oak timber dining table and neutral upholstered chairs are offset by the sculptural fabric pendant light. Along one wall we designed a bank of elegant and practical custom joinery in spotted gum. The warm shade of the timber pairs perfectly with the traditional colours of this Federation home, yet in a contemporary style. Open shelves provide areas for displaying treasured pieces and books, with drawers and cupboards to hide away the technological essentials of modern life. Finished with brass mesh and handles, the joinery complements the vibrant textures and patterns of the living room furniture.

The resulting space has a classic yet contemporary feel with an eclectic mix of luxe materials and finishes.
